02/2017 – Insight Series

In commemoration of the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery, this Insight Series looks at how surveys are being used to measure modern slavery, including forced labour and forced marriage.  As authors Jacqueline Joudo Larsen (Walk Free Foundation) and Pablo Diego Rosell (Gallup) note, surveys have been widely used in criminology to measure otherwise hidden victimization, such as domestic and sexual violence. In this paper, they explain the testing and development of Walk Free Foundation’s survey program on modern slavery, today a key source of data for both the Global Slavery Index and the Global Estimates of Modern Slavery, developed by the Walk Free Foundation and ILO, in partnership with IOM.
